Empowering Communities: UNICEF and TDA Spearhead Hydroponic Farming Advancements in Tigray, 03/09/2024

In a collaborative effort to revolutionize agricultural practices and empower communities, the Tigrai Development Association (TDA) and UNICEF joined forces to conduct a Capacity Building Training session on the scale-up of hydroponic farm technology. Held at the TDA Head Office, this session marked a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable development in Tigray.

Led by UNICEF’s Agriculture Advisor, Katrin Nina, the training session provided invaluable insights into the innovative techniques of hydroponic farming. Participants included TDA’s Executive Director, Mr. Tesfay G/her, alongside members of the management team, as well as experts from UNICEF, the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Agricultural Research Institute, and Tigray Bio-Technology.

Following the informative session, participants embarked on a field visit to the Kallamino Agricultural Investment Center to witness firsthand the progress of the hydroponic farm project and to Tigray Bio-Technology to see availability of hydroponic nutrients. Amidst discussions focused on technical support and knowledge sharing, the group explored the potential for introducing best hydroponic farming practices of Kenya in Tigray and addressing the livelihood challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the aspirations of youth.

Currently, the hydroponic farm project is making strides in the Kallamino Agricultural Investment Center, as well as in two schools, three Farmers’ Training Centers, and 50 households. Through these initiatives, TDA and UNICEF are not only enhancing agricultural productivity but also fostering sustainable livelihoods and empowering communities to thrive in the face of adversity.
