  • Tigrai Development Association/TDA is an independent, non-political, non-partisan, non-for-profit, membership based non-governmental organization (Local NGO).
  • It was established by a few farsighted and generous Tegaru diaspora community in August 1989 (1981 E.C) in Washington DC.
  • In May 1991 (1994 E.C) following the fall of the Derg regime in the country.
  • Tigrai is the intervention area of TDA.
  • TDA is registered as a rightful association in accordance with article 404 of the Ethiopian Civil Code and other relevant proclamations. It has been registered and licensed by FDRE Ministry of Justice, Charities and Societies Agency as resident charity in accordance with the Charities and Societies Proclamation No. 621/2009 article 111(2) with registration number 0462. It is a tax exempted community-based development organization working at grassroots level to realize its objectives.

  • Tigrai Development Association (TDA) desires to maintain the independent, non-political, non-religious, and non-partisan identity.
  • TDA Solicits resource from individual and organizational membership fees, governmental and non-government organizations’ funds, internal revenues from business for development directorates, telethon, short codes 6831 and 8160, tombola, and other fund-raising mechanisms.
  • Currently, it has about 1.3 million members.

  • TDA provides various membership options for organizations such as Level 1 (Platinum level worth of 150,000 birr; Level 2 (Gold Level worth of 20,000 birr); and Level 3 (Silver Level worth of 15,000 birr).
  • We do not offer consolidated billing for multiple individual memberships at an organization. However, you can coordinate start dates among your colleagues so that you receive invoices at the same time.
  • Organization memberships include the right for associations to add new and replacement staff to the extent allowed by their membership.
  • TDA essentially engages in improving access and quality of education and health; developing culture and language; mitigating youth unemployment and women empowerment. Specifically speaking, we intervene to fill the gaps in the development endeavors that the government lacks capacity to act upon.
  • Since its founding, TDA has achieved tremendous accomplishments in addressing the socio-economic needs of the people of Tigrai through building and furnishing 670 primary and 42 secondary schools, 6 science and technology centers including Kallamino Boarding Special High School, Mekelle Institute of Technology (MIT), 2 TVT centers including provision of vocational trainings for youths, 6 kindergartens, 21 libraries, 36 virtual computer centers, 74 health posts, 7 health centers and 2 hospitals.

Apart from this, it also established Circus Tigrai, cycling and football clubs, Music Tigrai and marsh band, War Victims’ Association, and Hawelti Construction that helped to build roads in different parts of Tigrai. It also played a lion’s share in establishing Selam Bus, Lion International Bank, Allenatec, Olive Pharmaceutical Industry and so forth.

  • Tigrai Development Association/TDA is a common platform where all citizens are treated equally regardless of political, religious, racial, gender and other disparities.

MIT has already been in possession of the federal government and TDA is now contemplating any possible conditions to establish a university owned and run by the people of Tigrai (State University of Tigray).

TDA has its own communication and public relations directorate in charge of promoting its activities and image. It does this through the social media and website it has at hand such as facebook, youtube, and twitter, as well as its TV and radio programs aired on Tigrai Mass Media Agency and Television Dimtsi Woyane Tigray. We also promote our activities through different mainstream media based in Tigrai and newspaper. We also do promotion and publicity via print media that include magazine, brochure, flier, fact sheet, etc. and other events like circus tour, media tour, exhibition and carnival, press conference, public conferences and any other gatherings.

TDA works a great deal in creating access to education through building and furnishing different levels of schools that in turn improves quality of education. Thus, TDA focuses on boosting both quality and quantity of education.

Transparency and accountability are the two main values TDA exercises and thereby often discloses the financial transactions as well as the projects executed to the public to avoid skepticism.

Above all, TDA uses three layers of auditing namely internal, board and external audits. This does help to ensure the core principles of transparency and accountability. 

TDA spends less than 20 percent of the funds collected from members, supporters, donors and other internal sources.
